Women at the heart of the Senegalese community in UK
WHO WE ARE?
Our HISTORY
The Association des Sénégalais(es) du Royaume-Uni (ASRU) was set up in March 2009 by the following founding members:
Laila Bittar, Awa Badji, Ami Diouf, Dicke Mbaye Lecocq, Myriam Sallah, Kiné Sarr, Nogaye Seck, Felicia Gassama and Soda Thiam
Following the tragic death of the late Cheikh Sadibou Thioye in 2007 and the ensuing outpouring of solidarity from Senegalese, his wife saw fit to create a structure to help Senegalese in the United Kingdom. The structure was feminine until 2013, when it opened its doors to all Senegalese without distinction. In 2014, it registered as company limited by guarantee.
In 2016, a restructuring was carried out following differences within the association, which gave the following members: Myriam Sallah, Dicke Mbaye, Ami Diouf, Mame Marie Aw and Malick Ndiaye the status of ad hoc founding members.
Our membership is made up of Senegalese from various trades such as accountants, engineers in finance and new information technologies, development specialists, educators, and various liberal professions.
In 2020, a new chapter opened through registering with Southwark Council Community Web, ASRU was able to benefit from council and National Lottery grants which enabled it to assist a large number of compatriots and restructure.
